2. Why Invest in a Christian Education Part 1
In the next few weeks, I will make myself available to area churches who will allow me to share ACS information.I will share with them data about ACS, number of students, tuition costs, after school activities, and process for enrolling.
The real decision is whether parents want their child to be educated in a Christian environment, where God is the decision maker, guide, and center.
I came across a couple of articles discussing the importance and/or advantages of Christian education. In the next couple of weeks, I will share those articles with you.
Why make the investment in a Christ-centered education for your child?
You have one chance to lay the foundation for the rest of your child's life. Give them the benefit of a challenging education rooted in truth, where they are surrounded by nurturing, Christian role models. Give your child an environment with positive peer relationships. Give your child solid preparation for the future and a lifetime of integrity.
Big Ideas to Consider:
1. Three key institutions that shape a child are the home, the church and the school. Children are served best when all three institutions point them in the same direction.
2. Deuteronomy 6 tells parents that, in all they do, they should provide a godly education 24/7.
Deutoronomy 6:7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.God told his people that his law was not only for them but also for their children and grandchildren. Because of this, the Israelites were called to “impress” God’s law on their children at every opportunity they could imagine.(c.f. Proverbs 22:6; Psalm 78:3-7) Proverbs 22: 6Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won’t depart from it.
3. There are basically two kingdoms: a kingdom of light and a kingdom of darkness. It seems strange to have those who walk in darkness educate children of light. It doesn't fit.
4. All truth is God's truth, and God's Word sheds light on our path. Only in His light can we see light. Education is not focused on possibilities but on certainties found in God's Word.
5. If Jesus Christ is Lord, then He is Lord of all. We cannot divide things into secular and sacred.
6. Only an education that has the liberty to address the whole child -- social, intellectual, emotional, physical AND spiritual -- reaches the possibility of excellence.
7. The best preparation for effective service is to be well grounded in one's mind before direct engagement of the culture.

3. Valentine's Day
Happy Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is less than a week away.If you have not selected your gift for the love of your life, better do so quickly. The Valentine celebration is a fun time for students everywhere.ACS students, teachers, and parents are planning their Valentine parties. Our junior high and high school students are preparing for the big “Social” scheduled for this Friday night.Every store you visit, there are red hearts and chocolate: boxes of chocolate, chocolate on TV promising to be the only love you need, chocolate Girl Scout cookies--CHOCOLATE!Remember Forrest Gump’s famous quote: "Life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get."
Recalling 1 John 4 verses 16 and 17, “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”You see, no matter what chocolate we are "in the middle of" right now, He is there--with the certainty of His promise today as well as His hope of heaven in the future. The Bible teaches us often about Christ’s love for us.Here are just a few:
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him.1 Cor 2:9
Though the mountains leave their place and the hills be shaken, my love will never leave you nor my covenant of peace be shaken, says the Lord, who has mercy on you.Is. 54:10
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.Jn. 15:12-13
For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.Jn. 3:16
The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.Rom. 5:5
Although you have never seen Him, you love Him, and without seeing, you now believe in Him, and rejoice with inexpressible joy touched with glory because you are achieving faith's goal, your salvation.1 Pet. 1:8-9
ACS is making a difference in the lives of students and families. Here is a note recently sent to staff:
“I wanted to take a moment and let you know that you and your staff have completely changed our girls’ lives!!!!!! I have never seen them so happy! I am loving watching God move in them both. It is such a joy to hear “daughter #1” singing "the B-I-B-L-E, that's the book for me!"And “daughter #2”and I read the bible together and highlight our favorite verses.
I told my husband the other night, who would have ever thought that “daughter #2” would be in the living room with us reading her bible; she used to go straight to her room when she would get home from school and we would never see her again!!!!!
Thank you for what you and your staff do, and thank you for loving our daughters! We feel so confident that the decision we made to move them was the BEST decision we have ever made!”
Parents, students and staff want to send our sincerest gratitude and most meaningful expression of LOVE to you for supporting Angleton Christian School, making Christian education possible in Angleton, and helping affect the eternal lives of ALL involved.

5. Lessons from 2011 create EXCITEMENT for 2012!
It is a time of year when the news media reviews the memorable events of 2011.There are so many ACS events and experiences I recall from the past year.God has been amazing!!He has taught me so much.I don’t think there has ever been a time in my life where I learned so much spiritually and academically.Though I have to say my greatest lesson has to be about FAITH.I think it might be safe to say that anyone involved in ACS has experienced and/or witnessed God’s hand of provision and guidance. My time at ACS has made me understand that God will provide and does it in such dramatic fashion that it is clear to everyone that it can only be from God.He will then stand back to see if WE will give him the glory and the credit. When WE allow him to guide, HE will provide!!
After learning that lesson, it makes thoughts of the challenges of 2012 less overwhelming and more exciting!!Exciting to see what He has in store for ACS!I am sure we will face times of uncertainty, like Moses as he wandered the wilderness …… let’s just pray that it won’t be for 40 years. We want this year to magnify, prove, and honor God much like Elijah did when he challenged the false prophets to PROVE their God.(1 Kings 18:1-40)
The Lord sent Elijah back to king Ahab, and a showdown of showdowns went down on Mount Carmel. Like a celestial boxing match with Baal and his false prophets in one corner and God and Elijah in the other, a battle began. The prophets of Baal took the first swing. They made a sacrifice to their god and cried out to him for hours to consume their offering with fire. After many hours of demonstrations, pleading, and praying to their god……. nothing happened. All repetitious prayers and rituals and voodoo tactics had proven useless.Baal was silent and unresponsive because he was not real.(Imagine that.)
Elijah would wait, never doubting, because he was fully persuaded of something most of us, at one time or another, doubt: God keeps His promises. Elijah knew he served a powerful, living, and responsive God, so he advanced to the center of the ring and took his swings with confidence. He repaired the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice, and then prayed for God to reveal His deity by consuming the offering. God flexed His divine muscles and answered Elijah's prayers instantly with an all-consuming fire…………. Knock out!
Elijah engaged the prophets of Baal in a duel of the gods on Mt. Carmel, testifying before all of Israel that Jehovah was the one true God and that Baal was an impotent god of stone. That is exactly what we want Angleton Christian School to do in 2012.We want ACS to represent and testify that Christ rules and is the one true God.
Elijah’s boldness was not a result of who he was; it was the result of knowing God!We don’t have to be timid or fearful when coming to God in prayer. We can approach God boldly. The Amplified Bible puts it like this: Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace(the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures]and find grace to help in good time for every need.Hebrews 4:16 AMP

6. Joy of Teaching
My Beacon article is late to Mrs. Wilson today for good reason!!I was in the classroom doing what I love most …. TEACHING and being with the kids.Mrs. Owens asked me to teach our High School students Geometry proofs. What a privilege and what fun (for me: not sure if students would agree).Today was a sudden bolt of enthusiasm and enjoyment.Leaving paperwork, problem solving, and decision making in the office and having the opportunity to work directly with students takes me back MANY years to the early days of my career.
Ten minutes into the class I remember so many days of my past and the students that I taught.I see some of them sitting here today.I see the student that is eager to learn, the student who can’t wait for class to end, the student with the blank stare, and the students who work so diligently, but the concept just does not come easy.Students really want to please and want to learn. There may be some bumps in the educational road, but in reality, they ARE eager to learn.
Again, I recognize the uniqueness ofAngleton Christian School and how fortunate students, staff, and parents are to have this opportunity.ACS is unique because it is a place where students have a different “heart”.Our students support each other, help each other, lift each other up, and are people pleasers.ACS students have been taught at home to respect teachers and authority. It is common to hear “yes sir” and “no sir”.ACS students live their Christian values daily and are not ashamed to stand for Christ. Not that all teachers don’t care about their students, but ACS is small enough where teachers can have MEANINGFUL relationships with their students. We are able to care enough to make a difference in their lives and our classes provide the opportunity for each child to receive individual attention needed. Angleton Christian School is a special place in so many ways, and WE ARE BLESSED.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
Galatians 6:66Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
Ephesians 4:1414 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
God works through teachers who draw us out of our own limited perspectives and away from the world’s critical one, to help us see ourselves—what we really are and what we can become.
What a GREAT place to be involved and make a difference!!Won’t you join us?

7. Risk It!
Risk It!
What does it matter if I get involved or not? It matters greatly—it matters to your character! Yes, it's true that God has other ways to accomplish His objectives. He has other people He can use. He isn't frustrated or restrained because you and I may be indifferent. When we have been called "for such a time as this," how tragic it is if we don't stand up in that hour.
There will be no celestial shout urging you to take a stand. Nor will a flash of lightning awaken you in the midst of your slumber. It doesn't work like that, so don't sit around waiting passively. Numerous needs and issues surround us. They summon us to stand up and MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Esther 4:12–14 -12 When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
ACS is strong and doing well, but with YOUR involvement, we could do so much more.WE want you to know that there IS a place for you to use your “gift” AND “make a difference”.
Not until you believe one person can make a difference will you be willing to take a risk. You answer to Him. He will help. He will give you wisdom and courage. You may be only one, but you are one. So, take a risk!
So let me ask you: Are you willing to take a risk?ACS has a place for you to serve God and MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the future of some CHRISTIAN children and young people. Here are some ideas and examples where YOU could MAKE A DIFFERENCE at ACS.
Work one on one with a student ……. Use your talents to help a specific student needing some individual attention.
Work with a small group of students preparing for academic competitions in number sense, storytelling, spelling, math skills, ready writing, science competitions, and others.
Counsel with Jr High or High School age students – college prep, technical school opportunities, vocational skills and trades needed after graduation.
Mentor a young teacher – curriculum development, lesson plans, teaching techniques you used, or just be available to answer their questions…. Your years of experience provide you with MANY mountains of valuable information and tips.
How about helping with some after school activities?Coaching, refereeing, tutoring, Student Council, Honor Society, or perhaps start your own reading club or running club.
Not sure about working with students, but want to be a part of ACS and use your skills for God?
How about checking out a refrigerator that is not cooling or a toilet that needs some attention, vacuuming, or replacing some lights?
Perhaps you could spend time with the after school care of about 10 students. We hire someone to be with them daily, but this would free that person to do some campus cleaning or perhaps just allow her an afternoon off every now and then.
Maybe you could take a look at the lighting in our marquis. It is VERY dim at nights and needs some help.
Are you a yard person? Our flower beds are needing some TLC.
ACS is a very special place and I think if you talked with anyone involved, you would hear what a Blessing it is to be a part.We invite you to RISK IT!!Call me at 979-864-3842, come by for a visit, or at least join us for chapel any Wednesday morning at 9 AM.

8. Veterans Day Comments
Here are some comments from our vets.
“The only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.” – Benjamin Rush Fitting quote considering I just attended a veterans appreciation program at Angleton Christian School yesterday morning. This was my second year to attend and I must say Gordon Smith and the rest of the staff did an excellent job…better than last year if I do say so myself. I believe there were 6 WWII veterans in attendance. I had the honor to sit between two of them during breakfast as well as during program. Always a humbling experience when you are able to hear their stories. As I did last year, I could not help but come away thinking that these Christian schools have the model right. Ever wonder what is wrong with the world today…why we seem to have so many problems. A big piece of that goes back to the fact that the Bible has been taken out of public schools. They no longer teach the pillars that George Washington and the other founders knew were indispensible supports for our self government and liberty. What is worse, with the expanding role of the federal government in education, we are also losing the freedom to send our children to schools that still do. Last week Congress re-affirmed the motto, “In God we Trust”. But do we?

9. Why Your Child Should Attend a Christian School
TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SEND YOUR CHILD TO A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
by Paul A. Kienel Paul, is the Executive Director of the Association of Christian Schools International.
The Christian school movement is the fastest growing educational movement in America today. The U.S.NEWS AND WORLD REPORT and CHRISTIAN LIFE magazines have referred to the rapid proliferation of Christian elementary and secondary schools as the “Boom in Protestant Schools” and “The Christian School Explosion.” Christian schools are currently being established across the United States at the rate of two new schools a day. (I recently attended the ACTABS Fall Accreditation meeting in Waco.According to Dr.Randy Wood, Executive Director of ACTABS, the number of schools applying for accreditation is more than ever before.)
ONE:You are accountable for what your children are taught in school. Proverbs 22:6 is a direct command to parents. It says, “Train up a child in the way he should go…” What your children are taught in school should be a direct extension of your parental views.
TWO: Christian schools offer a better level of instruction. The test scores over a long period of years are conclusive. The annual Stanford Achievement Test administered to first through eighth grade Christian school students in the western states shows these students to be seven to nineteen months ahead of the national norm in reading, and seven to thirteen months ahead of the national norm in all subject areas.
THREE: The Bible does not teach that children should be exposed to all kinds of sin. We are to train “up” a child. Children do not grow spiritually stronger in a negative non-Christian environment.School represents 16% of your child’s time. It is prime time, a training time, and Christian school education represents a positive Bible- centered form of instruction that will build a child up in the faith- -not tear him down. Proverbs 19:27 says, “Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.”
FOUR: The Christian school is right for your child because the Christian school has not cut itself off from the most important book in the world–the Bible. Without the Bible, education is nothing more than the blind leading the blind. Standards for morality must be taken from Scripture alone. As Theodore Roosevelt stated, “To train a man in mind and not in morals is to train a menace to society.”
FIVE: The Christian school provides an opportunity for your child to witness for Christ. This surprises some people because they assume all students in a Christian school are Christians. Christian students are trained and encouraged to reach others for Jesus Christ. Witnessing in a Christian school has the support of parents, students, teachers, administration and the school board.
SIX: Christian school educators teach all subject matter from a Christian context. They put the Bible at the center of the curriculum and ask students to evaluate all they see in the world through the eyes of God. To quote Dr. Roy Zuck,In a Christian school, a student is exposed to the centrality of God in all of life. In public education, a student is legally “sheltered” from this important dimension of education.
SEVEN:Christian schools support the family as the number one institution of society. Christian school educators train students to respect their parents.
EIGHT: I prefer to send my children to a Christian school because Christ is central to all information taught and caught. The public school is basically humanistic and materialistic in its approach to life and the fundamental questions of human existence and purpose. The Christian school holds a unique position with the home and the church.
NINE: Christian school educators maintain discipline in the classroom and on the playground. “For whom the Lord loves, He disciplines…” the Bible teaches. And it is within that context of love that discipline is carried out in a Christian school. According to the recent GALLUP POLL OF PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS EDUCATION,
Lack of discipline in the public schools again heads the list of problems cited most often by survey respondents. Discipline has, in fact, been named the number one problem of the schools in seven of the last eight years. New evidence of its importance comes from the special survey of high school juniors and seniors. An even higher percentage of this group names discipline as the leading problem faced by the public school.
TEN:”We believe that our children are gifts of the Lord. We are responsible to train them according to His Word not only at home and in church, but in school as well.” This statement was made by a parent in response to a question on an application form for enrollment of his children at Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
More and more parents, especially Christian parents, are coming to the conclusion that secular public education and most of its teachers and principals no longer represent their personal parental views. These parents are exercising their freedom of choice and sending their children to Christian schools and colleges.

Characteristics of Highly Effective Schools
Varied and ongoing assessments advance learning as well as measure it.(Varied Assessments) Continuous, authentic, and appropriate assessment measures, including both formative and summative ones, provide evidence about every student's learning progress. Such information helps students, teachers, and family members select immediate learning goals and plan further education.
Faith Becomes Sight
"Have faith that whatever you ask for in prayer is already granted you, and you will find that it will be" (Mark 11:24).
True faith counts on God, and believes before it sees. Naturally, we want some evidence that our petition is granted before we believe; but when we walk by faith we need no other evidence than God's Word. He has spoken, and according to our faith it shall be done unto us. We shall see because we have believed, and this faith sustains us in the most trying places, when everything around us seems to contradict God's Word.
The Psalmist says, "I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of living" (Ps. 27:13). He did not see as yet the Lord's answer to his prayers, but he believed to see; and this kept him from fainting.

15. Highly Effective Schools
Characteristics of Highly Effective Schools
Educators value young adolescents and are prepared to teach them.
Effective educators make a conscious choice to work with children and advocate for them. They understand the developmental uniqueness of the age group they teach, teach the appropriate curriculum, use effective learning and assessment strategies, and recognize their importance as models.

THE BIBLE:
Read it to be wise, Believe it to be safe, and Practice it to be holy.
It contains light to direct you, food to sustain you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's chart. Here paradise is restored, heaven opened, and the gates of Hell disclosed.
Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory and a river of pleasure. In short: READ IT DAILY, TRUST IT COMPLETELY and OBEY IT ALWAYS.

20. Establishing Home Routines
2 Corinthians 3:4-6: "Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." (NIV)
For years I walked in my own strength of "I can do it," but God brought me to His strength and the knowledge that "He can do it in me."
He has brought me out of my own power, which is so limited and flawed, to being dependent on the infilling power of His Spirit. Confidence in myself has very limited power, whereas confidence in Him brings limitless possibilities.
I know that I'll still have days of struggle with confidence, but my rebuilt and renewed sense of confidence is now firmly in Christ.
ACS Activities

Pinto beans, salad, pineapple, milk
Parents,
If you haven't already done so, then now is the time to make sure routines and procedures are in place. The “newness” of school is waning and students create their own “daily routine”.Providing procedures that emphasize the importance of school is VERY important.
Each afternoon talk with your child about school…. What did they learn today? What did you read today? What homework do you have?Let me see the notes or work you did today in History or English or Math? And last but not least…. It is very important that your child gets the appropriate amount of sleep, especially our Middle and High School age students. They seem to be the ones who stay up late and then can’t concentrate or stay awake.
We want to work with you to MAXIMIZE the educational opportunity for YOUR child!! Thank you!

Daily Communication for Thursday, August 4, 2011
Forgiving someone really is for you more than for them. Max Lucado says it best:A RAGING FIRE
Since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him.Romans 12:1
Resentment is the cocaine of the emotions. It causes our blood to pump and our energy level to rise. But, also like cocaine, it demands increasingly larger and more frequent dosages. There is a dangerous point at which anger ceases to be an emotion and becomes a driving force. A person bent on revenge moves unknowingly further and further away from being able to forgive, for to be without the anger is to be without a source of energy.
Hatred is the rabid dog that turns on its owner.
Revenge is the raging fire that consumes the arsonist.
Bitterness is the trap that snares the hunter.
And mercy is the choice that can set them all free.
