Robert (Bob) Hefner
I am blessed to be a first-time teacher at Angleton Christian School (ACS) this year following retirement from The Dow Chemical Co. June 30, 2021 after 49.2 years as a Research Scientist. During my career at Dow, 218 U.S. Patents and 63 published U.S. Patent Applications issued with me as inventor. Additionally, I am author on 25 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. God truly guided and blessed my industrial career in an extraordinary way and I am excited to now give back some of what He taught me to the students at ACS.
College credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minors in Business and Administration and Chemistry from Central Michigan University (magna cum laude, 1972) and a Master of Science in Chemistry from University of Houston at Clear Lake (summa cum laude, 1987). Additional college-level chemistry courses were completed at Michigan State University (1972-1977), as well as New Testament Greek (koine) courses I and II from the Southern Baptist University (SBC) Seminary Extension Department (1989 - 1990).
Past teaching experience includes mentoring students in chemistry (served as 2003 "Qualified Scientist" for a Brazoswood High School student that won 1st place in the Houston Regional Science Fair), Bible study/teaching/Christian leadership as a 6th grade Sunday School Director and Vacation Bible School (VBS) director, Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Children’s Class Supervisor, and invited teacher for biblical archaeology and Roman/Jewish history in the local public school system. In the Philippines I wrote and then taught a seminar on Industrial Thermoset Chemistry at Notre Dame of Marbel University (my wife’s college!) and Central Philippine University - College of Engineering. My years of teaching adult Sunday school involved a personal research approach guided by the Holy Spirit, culminating in preparation and teaching 104 lessons on Revelation; in-depth lessons on the origin, transmission and preservation of Scripture; and numerous lessons on extra-biblical references to Jesus (for use in witnessing to those that refuse the Bible).
I became a Christian in 1979 after God spoke to me one Saturday afternoon through Romans 2:4. God has blessed me with an amazing family, my wife Ivy Jean, and our son, Luke, a student at ACS since pre-K3. We live in Rosharon where we enjoy gardening, especially growing roses, and spoiling our senior aged cat, Anghel. On Sundays, you will find us serving as greeters to encourage our fellow worshippers at Second Baptist Church - South Campus (Pearland). The three of us are blessed to serve in the mission field in partnership with Marbel Baptist Church (SBC), our church in my wife’s hometown of Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Philippines. The heart of our ministry there is feeding, clothing and providing school supplies for the endless number of needy children, teaching and preaching the Gospel when we are there in person, and helping to build satellite churches in the villages surrounding Koronadal City. One of many favorite Bible verses has served as our guide for ministry and will continue to serve as my guide as a teacher: “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV)
